Death nell for VHS

2008-12-23 12:00:00 - by alisonw

I have somewhere around 450+ VHS video tapes, nearly all recorded with stuff I thought was 'important' off-air during the 80s and 90s. I still even pick one out at random occasionally to watch a spot of history – the closing hours of Thames TV, for example, or some particularly fine documentaries that are unlikely to ever be repeated.

Now, ars technica tells us that the final distributor of these holders of wonder is throwing in the towel at the end of the holiday season. The era ended some years ago when the DVD replaced the pre-recorded VHS tape, but let's all shed another tear anyway …

For the too-young amongst you, they were box-shaped pieces of plastic with magnetic tape inside, used for recording or time-shifting television programmes. 'VHS' was the format which won the marketing battle over 'Betamax' which was, allegedly, better technically.
